At 13th IMC 2023, we are initiating a new theme which should aid management institutions to rethink their business model and value creation approach in this age of disruption. Here is a short introduction to the theme.

IMC 2023 Theme: Business Value Creation in the Age of Disruption: Implications for Management Education.

Business value creation encompasses the strategic activities and initiatives undertaken by organizations to generate stakeholder value. It involves leveraging resources, capabilities, and innovative approaches to create products, services, and experiences that meet customer needs, drive revenue growth and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. In last two decades, Business Value Creation process has undergone a massive transformation, and understanding the same is critical for B-schools who produce talent for enterprises.

The origin of Business Schools can be traced to the rise of industrial and automobile companies in the US. For example, MIT’s business school is named after Alfred Sloan, the ex-CEO of General Motors. University of Pennsylvania’s business school is named after Joseph Wharton, a leader in manufacturing and metallurgy. To prepare managers for these corporations, B-schools were organized in departments, such as finance, production, marketing, and human resources. While this model worked well until the onset of the digital era, there is a growing dissatisfaction amongst business leaders with the talent that B-Schools are producing today.

In this context, some Management Thinkers have called for revisiting the theoretical foundation on which key management disciplines. In addition, there is a call to reorganize different disciplines/departments. In a 2021 HBR article, Innovation guru Vijay Govindarajan, wrote “In addition to transformations within business school departments, there’s a growing need for breakdowns of walls between departments. For example, in a company like Meta, marketing and strategy pervade across the company and are not under the purview of a specific department…MBA education must keep evolving from algorithmic learning — teaching predetermined answers to predetermined questions — to meeting the higher-order needs of the changing corporations…”

For such dramatic changes in management education, there is a need for deeper appreciation amongst MBA educators of how business is actually done today – by both the digital-natives and the traditional companies, that are restructuring themselves for the changing times.

In above context, INDIAN MANAGEMENT CONCLAVE (IMC) has adopted the overarching theme of Business Value Creation in the Age of Disruption, and its implications for MBA Education.

IMC shall invite business leaders and experts to explore these broad themes:

  1. Business Disruption: Understanding key drivers for today and tomorrow m
  2. Business Value Creation: How industries are creating stakeholder value
  3. Implications for MBA Education: How should B-schools adapt to create more value
